Toni Sailer – The black thunderbolt from Kitz

When he was just 21 years old, Toni Sailer was the first person in the history of skiing to win all three alpine skiing events in Cortina d’Ampezzo at his first and only participation in the Winter Olympics in 1956, sensationally taking gold in the downhill, slalom and giant slalom. With 170 victories under his belt, three Olympic gold medals and seven world championship titles, the trained glazier and plumber became worldrenowned as one of the most successful ski athletes of all time. After stepping out of the professional sport at just 23 years of age, Toni Sailer launched a career as a singer and actor. Yet skiing held a dear place in his heart right up until the very end, he sadly passed away on the 24th August 2009.
